Farm Risk Management Educational Series II

The Center for Latino Farmers, a division of the Rural Community Development Resources (RCDR) is sponsoring a Spanish/English 20-hour Farm Risk Management Series for new and beginning farmers/Ranchers.  The participants will learn about the importance of managing your farm business, risk awareness programs, insurance products, farm operations legal formation & benefits, corporations, warehouse contracts, farm purchases, property rights, water rights, estate planning, long-term investments and food safety and security.

Date: May 27, 28, 29, 2014
Time: 5:30pm to 9:00 pm (every evening)

Washington Swine Information Day – Feb. 7

The Washington Swine Information Day will be held on February 7, 2014 from 9:00 am until 5:15 pm at the Pillar Rock Restaurant/Moses Lake Golf & Country Club in Moses Lake.  The educational seminar is designed for progressive pork producers and stakeholders; addressing critical and emerging swine production issues in the Pacific Northwest.  Swine producers of all sizes; 4-H/FFA youth producers; agency representatives; agriculture educators; and fair/show representatives are invited to participate.   The event has been organized and sponsored by Washington Pork Producers, National Pork Board, and Washington State University Extension.

USDA Seeks Applications for Grants to Provide Technical Assistance to Help Rural Businesses Grow

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that USDA is seeking applications from qualified organizations to provide technical assistance to rural businesses to help them expand and create jobs. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. The announcement is one part of the Department’s efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

Funding will be provided through USDA Rural Development’s Rural Business Opportunity Grant (RBOG) program. Up to $2.6 million is available through this notice. The maximum grant is $100,000.

Grants may be used for feasibility studies, strategic planning, leadership training and other types of business development activities. Eligible applicants include public bodies, non-profit corporations, institutions of higher education, Indian tribes and rural cooperatives.

Conservation Clearinghouse Ver. 1.0 now available

A new feature on the OFP web page was recently added.  In the menu bar you will now find a tab titled “Conservation Clearinghouse”.  This tab contains over 200 conservation program opportunities from over a dozen agencies and local governments.

The conservation programs represent many of the available ongoing opportunities for private landowners and conservation agencies/groups in Washington State.
