Office of Farmland Preservation December Newsletter

jgiuntoli December 18th, 2008

Eastern Washington farm at sunsetThe December OFP newsletter includes an update on the Ruckelshaus Center process as they examine the interactions between agricultural activities and the environmental regulation of critical areas. They have been working with stakeholders to identify approaches that will advance both agricultural viability and environmental protection goals.

Also of interest is a brief look at feed lots in the greater agricultural economy. The livestock industry is directly impacted by changes in both the reduction and addition of feed lots. Feed lots tie many facets of the economy together ranging from construction jobs to farmers and ranchers throughout the state. One aspect of the livestock industry that will be discussed in an upcoming newsletter is the loss of livestock auction markets and what role they have played and their future outlook.
